"ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE"
You really don't know how much it means to me that you have taken the time to look at our site!
As some of you know, Patrick and I are twin brothers. When Patrick was born his umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck, which cut off his oxygen supply to his brain and resulted in him having Cerebral Palsy. That has not stopped him from missing a beat and being the best brother anyone could ask for!!! :-) Patrick and I come from a very large family, but within our family he is my only biological brother and means the world to me!
In 2007 I competed in my first triathlon and started doing 5k and 10k fun runs. One evening I was watching a documentary on Team Hoyt www.teamhoyt.com while they where competing in the Hawaii Iron man and thought WOW, that could be Patrick and I one day. After doing some research about Team Hoyt I found Team Rocket http://www.ontherun.ca/articles.php?dir=running_and_writing/team_rocket/ and was blown away by both of their stories and thought wow, How much fun would Patrick having doing this???
So we are starting small with the Chestertown Half Marathon http://www.chestertownhalfmarathon.com/, which supports Athletes Serving Athletes http://www.athletesservingathletes.org/. The reason I have picked this race is because Athletes Serving Athletes is letting us barrow a chair and there will be at least five other runners pushing people.
Last weekend, 8/12/10 Patrick sat in the chair for the first time and loved it. I put it together in the living room and he immediately sat in it. How did he know it was for him? ☺
I want to do this, so my brother can get out and enjoy the world and to show other people that just because someone has a disability doesnt mean they are bound to sitting in the house all day. They have feelings and emotions just like we do. If I ever need a smile I know whom I can count on 100% and that is Patrick. Every time I go home I get the biggest smile from him!
The only downside is this chair is just a little bit to small for him has he is 62 but that's okay we will still go on with the Half Marathon. We will probably have a fundraiser of some sort to try and help with the cost for the chair since its between 2,500 to 3,000 dollars. If you have any fundraising ideas please let me know? I have been saving for over a year now, but I have been told that a fundraiser wouldnt hurt to have with family and friends since I am a Senior at George Mason University.
If you have any thoughts, ideas, or anything, please dont hesitate and let us know by sending an email to bgreen0027@aol.com
